Friday Flicks: Barton Fink

One of the best of the Coen Brothers creations, Barton Fink (1991) is about a nerdy, pseudo intellectual NYC playwright who gets writer's block when he takes on a job in Hollywood to write a script for a wrestling picture. Hilarity ensues.

Turturro is amazing in this movie.

Luana - it had to happen sometime. Although I am enamored of several Coen Brothers movies - this isn't one of them. I prefer Fargo or O Brother to this one - which I found to be muddled and weird for weird's sake. Although, truth be told, my one viewing was twenty years ago - maybe I should give it another try, now that I'm more familiar with the CB's eclectic filmmaking style. I'll let you know what a second viewing brought me when I see it!

Craig: Thanks for your honesty. The Coen's aren't really my cup of tea...however, this is my favorite of theirs. It's very weird but what won me over was John Turturro's unique portrayal of Barton Fink. The movie is like a surreal painting brought to life. In fact, the best part was the painting on the wall motif and the significance of "water." Cinematography = superb.
