The Plan

The video production class has inspired me so I'm going to create some short movies using the in-camera editing technique that we learned.

The first step is to come up with some stories. I want to try different genres including a comedy, a drama and a thriller. I might even try a documentary.

Things to do:
Sit down with my laptop and white chocolate mocha and come up with a premise and a story

Write script

Recruit actors

Plan the shots (lights, sound)

Music? (a problem with four solutions: do not use music at all, get copyright permission for music I want, use copyright free music, or write and perform my own music)

Create titles and credits

By making a few movies now, I'll have some experience under my belt for the 2011 Cheyenne Shoot Out this fall!

That's quite a to-do list! For music, maybe you could include a little local talent? I'd bet there are some young bands/musicians who would jump at the opportunity to work with you on a soundtrack to get a little exposure.
I think it's great that you're really moving ahead into what looks to be a new area of interest! Very inspiring.

This sounds like a wonderful plan. You're going to be very busy.

Best of luck with this - it's a pretty heady feeling to see people acting as characters you created and saying words you wrote - I think you will enjoy that! My best recommendation is to build in some rehearsal time before you start shooting - to allow actors playing longtime friends and family a chance to find their chemistry; and to work out kinks in the script before the camera rolls - or alternately, with video so cheap and easy to shoot - do all the rehearsing on camera - and sort it out in the editing room! Let me know if I can offer any other advice or opinions! ;)

baygirl: Love the white chocolate mocha. I'm also a fan of the coconut mocha frappucino.

Craig: You are right about actors performing your script. I write sketches for our drama troupe and it's the coolest feeling in the world to see them tell your story. I especially love the reaction of the audience.

You're right about rehearsal, too. When we did our short video, we practiced a bit before shooting...but the actors were experienced (me and Joe) so it was much easier than people who have no clue how to perform. I will say that performing for video is much different than performing on stage. In some ways easier (not so many lines to learn at once) and in some ways more difficult.

Thanks for your offer of assistance. I'll will definitely be asking for advice if any problems come up.
