A to Z Blogging Challenge: Movie Memories
Blogging about the movies that made an impact on my life
Obviously with a blog called Emerald City, the Wizard of Oz (1939) has a special place in my heart. I've seen this movie more than any other because I watched it throughout my childhood every year around Easter time. It became a family tradition.
It's all about going after your heart's desire. For the Scarecrow it was Knowledge; for the Tin Man it was Love; for the Lion it was Courage; and for Dorothy it was Home. The wonderful irony is that they already had what they wanted all along.
The music is delightful. The Munchkins are adorable. The Flying Monkeys are horrifying. Glinda the Good Witch is beautiful. And Emerald City is magical.
My favorite character is the Wicked Witch of the West. I don't know what that says about me, but without the Witch, the story would be pretty uneventful.

I agree with you about the Wicked Witch. They made a fantastic Broadway musical from her character. So others feel like you do. The favorite character from Star Wars for many people is Darth Vadar. What is that cliche? Evil makes good look better. LOL. Have a delightful day in the Emerald City -- isn't that a suburb of our imaginations? Roland
Hi, Roland: Great to hear from you. As writers, we know that conflict is the name of the game. If Dorothy and Luke Skywalker don't have any obstacles on their way down the yellow brick road (or a far away galaxy) then the story is pretty ho hum. Here's to the Witch, Darth, and all the other bad guys & gals!
I love the whole theatrical feel of the movie, but even at my age- I still close my eyes during certain parts! How many times did I have nightmares after watching this?
But it has a beautiful underlying theme...and I agree.
There's No Place Like HOME!
Rae: It's truly magical. A whole other world...Thanks for stopping by!
My grandmother is younger than this movie! My mother grew up watching it and so did I. So will my children. This movie has a timeless quality that will survive for as long as we are viewing movies.
Marjorie: I agree...it's a true classic for all generations. So glad they didn't let Shirley Temple play Dorothy. Divine Intervention.
It's a gorgeous looking piece of Hollywood confection that's more filling than a five course meal! I watched this yearly back during its annual CBS airing, and still try to catch it when it airs these days - I don't own it yet - but I will have to pick up one of those packed releases of the last few years - it's a must! Thanks for this one, Luana!
Craig: I've owned the DVD for years, but there was something special about watching it on TV back in the day before the invention of the VCR and movie channels.
Great choice! As you know, Fleming's classic was in my consideration for "W." Glad you gave it its due time under the Alphabet spotlight!
Matthew: It was pretty much a given. Emerald City and all that jazz. Thanks for stopping by! I can't believe we're almost done with the challenge...
Great choice for W. The Wizard of Oz is the best.
I also loved Wicked -- the book and musical. Good stuff.
L.G.: I read "Wicked" but haven't seen the show. I've heard some of these songs. I'd love to see it.
I never really liked the Wizard of Oz, when I was a kid, it wasn't until I was older and understood the real message that I appreciated the movie. And then I lived in Kansas, man did the Wizard of Oz jokes get old.
Spenc: LOL...did you ever read the Wizard of Oz analogy to the Industrial Revolution. Very interesting.
I am a good man, but a bad wizard....
pn: True!
